Nothing is free in life

After Google announced several weeks ago that they will be offering free wireless service in San Francisco, the first thought came to my mind was that nothing is ever free. Someone's going to pay for the service whether it's through advertising or a bombardment of spam or even traffic eavesdropping. Yes, it doesn't sound like such a splendid idea.

With all the security/spam/virus vulnerability issues that can and will arise from a city networked wirelessly, the SF government requested additional options and they got them. All 26 from different companies around the bay area. After all, this is the dot.com hub where computer and internet technology began. And competition is fierce. If you think about it, what company wouldn't want the opportunity to be the first to network a whole city wirelessly? Someone's going to have to pay through the nose for the priviledge though. And it better not be the customers.
